INDEPENDENT/DEPENDENT STATUS

When you complete the FAFSA, your answers to particular questions will determine whether you will be considered as dependent or independent.

Independent Students
You are considered an independent student if at least one of the following applies to you:

  • you were born before January 1, 1977
  • you're married
  • you're enrolled in a graduate or professional educational program (beyond a bachelor's degree)
  • you have legal dependents other than a spouse
  • you're an orphan or ward of the court (or were ward of the court until age 18) or
  • you're a veteran of the US Armed Forces ("veteran" includes a student who attended a US military academy who was released under a condition other than dishonorable.)

If you believe that you have unusual circumstances that make you an independent even though none of the above criteria apply to you, talk to your financial aid advisor. If you are independent, you must report only your own income and assets (and those of your spouse, if you are married).

 Dependent Students
You are a dependent student if none of the above apply to you.

As a dependant student, you must report your parents income and assets as well as your own.
